Gigabit Magnetics / RJ45 connector modules for Intel 82571

Posted by: Michael Crudele on Thursday, August 23rd, 2007
Had a customer come in today looking for magnetics for the Intel 82571 gigabit (1000 base T) ethernet MAC / PHY controller. You can find all technical documents on this Intel Chip at this link:
http://www.intel.com/design/network/products/lan/docs/82572ei_docs.htm
We'll here is what we sold him...the BEL FUSE " MagJack " (RJ45 connector with gigabit magnetics and LED's) Part # 0875-1X1T-B2. Data sheet can be found at:
http://www.belfuse.com/Data/Datasheets/0875-1X1T-B2.pdf
I had another customer use this before (actually, he used teh 0875-1K1T-B2, which is just a different combination of LED colors) and it performed perfectly. That said, they run about $5.00 or so for 1K pcs, and we either have them in stock at Arcadian Sales, franchised distributor for BEL (Bel Fuse - Stewart Connector) , or can get them pretty quickly.

Ethernet (LAN) transformers needed for LXT971 / LXT972 chips

Posted by: Michael Crudele on Friday, August 17th, 2007
An email came in yesterday from a customer on the west coast looking for magnetics (wound torroids for impedance matching) for the LXT971 and LXT972 "PHY" chips (physical layer transceivers) from Intel - formerly Level One, now Cortina Systems. These are very popular chips for use in just about any electronic circuit design that needs a single (one) 10/100 baseT lan/ethernet connection. Why are they so popular? Here is what Intel has to say: The following list provides key features of the LXT971A/972A:
• 3.3V operation
• 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX using a single RJ-45
• 100BASE-FX (LXT971A only)
• Auto-negotiation and parallel detection support
• Low-power consumption (300 mW typical)
• Low-power Sleep mode (LXT971A only)
• Full MII interface with extended registers
• Configurable via MDIO serial management port or hardware control pins
• Integrated, programmable LED drivers

To find all data sheets application notes and design guides for these chips, go to http://www.cortina-systems.com/products/view/35

Anyway, getting back to the magnetics for these units, the app note recommend:

Turns Ratio: Rx = 1:1, Tx = 1:1
BelFuse Part #'s: Commercial Temp S558-5999-T7, Industrial S558-5999-T5

These transformers from BEL (Bel Fuse) can be found on our website at:
http://arcadiansales.com/bel-fuse-inc/discrete-magnetics-for-lan-ethernet-or-telecom/S5585999T7F/
http://arcadiansales.com/searchbypartnumber_details.php?part_number=S5585999T5F

You'll notice that these part numbers have a " -F " on the end. That suffix denotes "lead-free" or RoHS compliant version.

In addition, i'd like to recommend an RJ45 connector for use with these magnetics. Check out the Stewart Connector # SS-6488-NF at this link...
http://arcadiansales.com/bel-fuse-inc/passive-rj45-or-cat5-cat6-connector-jack-or-plug/SS6488NF/

Lastly, keep in mind that when Level One came out with these parts, ICM or integrated connector modules, like the MagJack from Bel Fuse, were not popular yet. This a a combination RJ45, ethernet magnetics, resistors, capacitor and LED's. That said, today i'd highly recommend taking a look at a "MagJack" type solution if i was using an LXT971 or LXT972 chip. Specifically, i'd check out the 08B0-1X1T-06-F1 and 08B0-1X1T-36-F1 from Bel Fuse. the -06 is good for 0-70 degrees C and the -36 is good for -40 to +85 degrees C. Check them out at the links below...

If anybody out there needs any assistance with magnetics for 10/100 ( or gigabit, or 10 gig) designs, don't hesitate to contact me at mikec@arcadiansales.com

RJ45 connector with 1000 baseT / gigabit ethernet

Posted by: Michael Crudele on Thursday, August 16th, 2007
I had a technical inquiry from a customer in Thailand today, and wanted to share the discussion with you... The customer has a circuit design that includes a PHY chip (physical layer transceiver) for 1000 BaseT, or gigabit ethernet, and he wanted to make the connection to the outside world and was asking how to do this. I told him he had the following two options...
1. "Discrete" components. In this scenario, the customer could use a gigabit transformer (for impedance matching) along with a passive RJ 45 jack. Specifically, i recommend the S558-5999-P3-F transformer from Bel Fuse Inc (about $2.53 for 500 pcs.) We find that this part works best with 1000 BaseT tranceivers from Broadcom. Or, if the design is using Marvel PHY, i'd recommend the S558-5999-M8-F transformer from Bel Fuse Inc (about $1.81 for 500 pcs.) In conjuction with this, we recommend the SS-60300-010 connector from Stewart(about $1.67 for 500 pcs.) See links:

http://arcadiansales.com/searchbypartnumber_details.php?part_number=SS60300010

2. The second way to attack this design is with MagJack (integrated connector modules) from BEL (Bel Fuse - Stewart Connector.) The MagJacks include an RJ45 connector, 10/100/1000 baseT magnetics, (4) 75 ohm resistors, a 1000pf / 2Kv capacitor and LED indicators for link and activity. If you choose this solution, i would recommend using the Bel Fuse 0826-1X1T-23-F (about $3.75 for 500 pcs) for Broadcom based designs, or the 0826-1K1T-43-F (about $3.37 for 500 pcs)for Marvell based designs. Both links are below.

MoCA / CATV Triplexer for DOCSIS 2.0 from Bel Fuse

Posted by: Michael Crudele on Tuesday, August 7th, 2007
This morning, i had a customer inquire about a cross to a Pulse Engineering part # C6058, a MoCA diplexer. So, i sent the request off to Mr. Lee Hancock, product manager for broadband products from Bel Fuse. Here is what he had to say...

"At this time Bel does not have a direct equivalent to the Pulse part specified. However, in an effort to expand our RF product line, Bel joined the MoCA Alliance in August 2006 and since have been actively engaged in MoCA Diplexers and Triplexers for supporting various MoCA WAN and LAN applications including ONT’s, Set Top Boxes etc. We already have a wide range of offerings in the MoCA space and would like to present to your Engineering team our technical strengths and capabilities, discuss our ability to develop such a Diplexer and detail future product options.

To give you an example of a recent MoCA design, I attach a typical specification of a MoCA Triplexer, for Bel Fuse part # 0806-5400-56(Bel Fuse, MoCA/CATV Triplexor for DOCSIS 2.0 w/high band pass filter(975-1525 MHz) middle pass filter(54-864 MHz) & low pass filter(5-42 MHz & surge protection.) This splits the standard CATV DOSCIS 2.0 band into Upstream and Downstream as would be seen in any Cable Modem or Set Top Box application, but we have also added a 3rd MoCA band. In this case it just happens to include the WAN and LAN frequency bands but we have many other band allocation options. These filters and designed into a compact metal shielded housing with the Common Port F-connector attached."

RJ45 connector with ethernet and PoE (power over ethernet)

Posted by: Michael Crudele on Monday, August 6th, 2007
Today i had a customer ask me if we had any devices to offer for a PoE (power over ethnernet) application. I told him about the PoE / PoE Plus "MagJacks" from Bel (Bel Fuse - Stewart connector) and he found the information interesting, so i figured i'd share it with you...

I'm not an engineer, but to the best of my knowledge, PoE, or the original IEEE802.3af standard, allows up to 12.95watts of power to be carried over the unused pair of wires in a 10/100 fast ethernet or 1000 baset gigibit cable (ie: cat5, cat5e, cat6, cat6a.)

In order to do this, the RJ45 connectors on both the PSE (power sourcing equipment) for example a mid-span PoE switch, to the PD (powered device) for example a VoIP phone or IP camera, must be PoE or PoE plus capable.

All that said, we carry BEL (or Bel Fuse - Stewart connector) and they have several options in their MagJack product line to accomodate designs of POE. They are...

0813-1X1T-57-F: single port RJ45, with 10/100 magnetics and PoE capability http://arcadiansales.com/bel-fuse-inc/rj45-connector-with-ethernet-or-voip-poe-magnetics/08131X1T57F/

0826-1X1T-57-F1: single port RJ45, with 10/100 magnetics and PoE with LED's http://arcadiansales.com/bel-fuse-inc/rj45-connector-with-ethernet-or-voip-poe-magnetics/08261X1T57F1/

0826-1X1T-80-F1: single port RJ45 with gigabit magnetics and PoE capability and LED's http://arcadiansales.com/bel-fuse-inc/rj45-connector-with-ethernet-or-voip-poe-magnetics/08261X1T80F1/

For PoE "Plus" which i believe is designed to carry 40W of power we have...
0838-1X1T-W6: single port RJ45 with 10/100 and PoE "plus" with LED's http://arcadiansales.com/bel-fuse-inc/rj45-connector-with-ethernet-or-voip-poe-magnetics/08381X1TW6/

0838-1X1T-W7: single port RJ45 with gigabit ethenet and PoE "plus" with LED's http://arcadiansales.com/bel-fuse-inc/rj45-connector-with-ethernet-or-voip-poe-magnetics/08381X1TW7/

The price range for quantities in the several hundreds ranges from less than $3 per port to just over $5 depending on the options you need, and can be ordered via our website at www.arcadiansales.com
